Geist Montessori Academy utilizes an educational philosophy which encompasses rigorous academic goals as well as: social service, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, environmental education, and a focus on process vs. product. It is a state-funded public charter school. Students are assessed using research-based best practices. Curriculum includes preparation for state standardized testing. Narrative progress reports and student work portfolios are the primary methods of assessment rather than numerical/letter indicators (grades) and grad level comparisons. Students make a six-year commitment to their learning objectives which are met in a three-year cycles, not by grade levels.
Parents are expected to support and participate in Montessori activities as well as the traditional strand of school activities at Geist Montessori Academy. Parents are expected to attend all parent education programs. Also, parents are expected to volunteer in the classroom or on committees to support the entire school.
Geist Montessori Academy educates all its students regardless of level of progress or impairment. A typical student at Geist Montessori Academy, however, is intrinsically motivated to learn and is able to:
· follow through independently with minimal adult direction;
· focus in a busy environment in which many activities are going on at once;
· work at an individual pace within a multi-age classroom;
· resolve conflict in a peaceful manner;
· participate collaboratively with others in a productive manner.
